The Goddess
A Raadha Kalpa Production
Choreography & Direction: Rukmini Vijayakumar
In Indian tradition, the embodiment of might, triumph, and inner force is presented through feminine divinity. Parvati’s manifestations—Kali, Devi, and Durga—stand as symbols of unmatched strength and courage. While many cultures associate authority with masculine figures, the Hindu pantheon places this power in its goddesses, who symbolize a wide range of essential qualities. Wisdom and creation, prosperity and nourishment, endurance, artistic expression, beauty, compassion, and grace—all are represented by these divine feminine forms.
This production unfolds through three choreographed pieces, each illuminating different attributes of the goddesses.
Sundari
Featured Artist & Composer: Ambi Subramaniam
Indian goddesses are envisioned as magnificent beings adorned with precious gems—pearls, rubies, and diamonds—wearing intricate ornaments and flowing silks. Their long hair moves like drifting clouds, their forms are radiant and full, and their delicate wrists and ankles are encircled with jingling jewelry. They are portrayed as sensual, elegant, and graceful, yet undeniably powerful.
Maharajni
Featured Artist: Raghuram Rajagopalan
Composer: Raghuram Rajagopalan
In modern depictions, feminine power is often stripped of sensuality, as contemporary media frequently objectifies women. The Indian goddesses, however, embody both strength and sensuality without contradiction. Kali is revered for her breathtaking beauty while radiating fierce, commanding energy. Maharajni, the sovereign of the cosmos, inspires awe and fear even as she represents boundless love and compassion.
Manonmani
Featured Artists & Composers: Sunaad Anoor & Anoor Vinod Shyam
Creation springs from thought, and in this philosophy, both the creator and the creation are manifestations of Devi. Though they appear separate, they are one and the same. As Devi moves with effortless grace, life emerges—birds soar, blossoms open, rivers travel, mountains rise, and the pulse of existence awakens. In her presence, the rhythm of the entire universe begins to flow once more.
