Dance in Devotion | Pt. Sandeep Mahavir & Maithili Thakur
About the Event
Dance in Devotion is an evocative artistic presentation that brings together the timeless beauty of Indian classical dance and the soulful richness of devotional music. The event creates a unique confluence of Kathak, bhakti, rhythm, melody, poetry and expressive storytelling, inviting audiences to experience devotion through the universal language of art.
Featuring distinguished Kathak artist Pt. Sandeep Mahavir alongside celebrated singer Maithili Thakur, the performance explores devotion as an emotional and artistic experience that can transcend form, language and tradition.
Through an engaging interplay of taal and sur, nritya and sangeet, expression and surrender, Dance in Devotion takes audiences on a journey through stories and emotions deeply rooted in India's spiritual and artistic heritage.
A Celebration of Indian Classical Dance and Devotional Music
Indian classical arts have long provided a powerful medium for expressing spiritual ideas, emotions and stories. Dance in Devotion brings these artistic traditions together on one stage, allowing movement and music to complement one another.
The performance explores the many dimensions of bhakti, presenting devotion not simply as a religious concept but as a state of complete emotional surrender. Every rhythm, melody and gesture contributes to an immersive artistic experience.
The presentation offers audiences an opportunity to witness how classical dance and devotional music can communicate emotions that go beyond words.
Pt. Sandeep Mahavir – The Language of Kathak
Distinguished Kathak artist Pt. Sandeep Mahavir brings his command of rhythm and nuanced abhinaya to Dance in Devotion.
Through Kathak, stories can be expressed through precise movements, rhythmic patterns, facial expressions and gestures. In this performance, the vocabulary of dance becomes a medium for bringing devotional narratives and emotions to life.
His artistic presentation adds depth to the performance through the combination of rhythmic command, expressive storytelling and abhinaya. Each movement contributes to the larger exploration of devotion, allowing audiences to connect with the stories and emotions being portrayed.
Maithili Thakur – Soulful Devotional Music
Celebrated singer Maithili Thakur brings her distinctive voice and deeply emotive renditions to the musical dimension of the presentation.
Her expressive singing adds warmth and spiritual intensity to the performance, complementing the movement and rhythm of Kathak. Through melody and poetry, the musical component of Dance in Devotion creates an emotional atmosphere that enhances the overall artistic experience.
The combination of Maithili Thakur's voice with classical dance creates an engaging dialogue between music and movement.
Where Taal Meets Sur
One of the defining elements of Dance in Devotion is the seamless connection between taal and sur.
Rhythm gives structure to movement, while melody creates an emotional landscape for the performance. When these elements come together, dance and music become interconnected forms of expression.
The presentation brings together:
Taal and Sur – rhythm and melody working together.
Nritya and Sangeet – classical dance meeting devotional music.
Abhinaya and Poetry – expression bringing stories and emotions to life.
Movement and Melody – visual and musical storytelling complementing each other.
Expression and Surrender – artistic performance becoming a reflection of devotion.
Exploring the Meaning of Bhakti
At the heart of Dance in Devotion is the idea of bhakti.
The performance approaches devotion as more than a formal religious practice. It presents bhakti as a state of deep emotional connection, surrender and expression.
Through dance and music, audiences are invited to experience devotion from an artistic perspective. The stories, melodies, rhythms and movements together create an atmosphere where emotion becomes the central language.
The presentation reflects the idea that art can provide a space for contemplation, connection and emotional expression.
A Journey Through India's Artistic Heritage
Dance in Devotion is rooted in India's rich tradition of combining music, poetry, storytelling and movement.
The performance draws upon artistic forms that have historically been used to communicate stories and emotions across generations. Through the collaboration of Pt. Sandeep Mahavir and Maithili Thakur, these elements come together in a contemporary presentation while retaining their connection to India's classical and devotional heritage.
Audiences can look forward to an evening centred around Indian classical dance, devotional music, poetry, rhythm and expressive storytelling.
An Artistic Dialogue Between Two Forms
The interaction between Kathak and devotional music forms the heart of this presentation.
Dance communicates through movement, gesture and expression, while music communicates through voice, melody and rhythm. When presented together, these forms create a dialogue that allows each artistic element to enhance the other.
The result is a performance where the visual language of Kathak and the emotional quality of devotional singing come together naturally.
