About the Event
Being There – An Experiential Workshop on Suicide Prevention
Sometimes we notice that someone may be struggling, but we do not know what to say, how to begin a conversation or what kind of support could make a difference.
Being There is an experiential workshop on suicide prevention designed to help participants become more prepared to notice when someone may need support, start a conversation and respond with care.
The workshop goes beyond simply explaining what to say or do. Participants will have opportunities to practise supportive responses through guided activities, examples, reflection and conversation.
The aim is to help attendees develop greater confidence in being there for someone who may be going through a difficult time.
No prior experience in mental health or suicide prevention is required.
What Is Being There?
Being There is an educational and experiential workshop focused on practical suicide-prevention awareness.
The session explores situations in which someone may be experiencing difficulty and how people around them can respond thoughtfully.
Rather than treating suicide prevention as a purely theoretical subject, the workshop gives participants opportunities to explore realistic situations and practise how they might respond.
The experience focuses on three important areas:
Noticing when someone may be struggling
Starting a supportive conversation
Responding with care
Learn What to Notice
One of the first steps in supporting someone is recognising when they may be going through a difficult period.
The workshop explores how to become more attentive to signs that a person may need support and how to approach such situations with care.
Participants will have an opportunity to work through examples and guided activities designed to make these ideas easier to understand and apply.
Learn How to Start a Conversation
Knowing that someone may be struggling is one thing. Starting a conversation can feel much harder.
Being There provides an opportunity to explore how conversations about someone's wellbeing can be approached with sensitivity and care.
Through guided practice and examples, participants can work on becoming more comfortable with initiating a supportive conversation rather than avoiding it because they are unsure what to say.
Practise Responding with Care
The workshop is experiential because participants do more than listen.
Through guided activities, examples, reflection and conversation, attendees can practise possible ways of responding when someone may be going through a difficult time.
This practical component is intended to build confidence and help participants think through how they might respond in real-life situations.
A Workshop Based on Practice and Reflection
Being There combines learning with active participation.
The workshop provides space for participants to:
Explore
Understand approaches to recognising when someone may need support.
Practise
Work through examples and guided activities.
Reflect
Consider how they might respond to challenging situations.
Discuss
Engage in conversations around support and suicide prevention.
Build Confidence
Leave with greater confidence in being there for someone who may be struggling.
No Prior Mental Health Experience Required
Participants do not need any prior experience in mental health or suicide prevention to attend.
The workshop is intended to make the subject accessible to people who simply want to feel more prepared to support someone around them.
The emphasis is on learning practical approaches and developing confidence through participation.
Who Is This Workshop For?
The workshop is for anyone who wants to feel more prepared to notice when someone may be struggling, start a conversation and offer support.
This can include people who simply want to be more aware and better prepared in their personal, social or community environments.
You do not need to be a mental health professional or have any specialised background to participate.

This approach allows attendees to engage with the subject through multiple forms of learning, including discussion, examples, guided exercises and personal reflection.
This Is Not a Therapy or Crisis-Support Session
Please note that Being There is an educational and experiential workshop, not a therapy or crisis-support session.
The session is intended to provide education, awareness and practical learning around suicide prevention and supporting people who may be struggling.
It is not presented as a substitute for professional mental health care or crisis support.
Building Confidence to Be There
A key aim of the workshop is to help participants feel more prepared when they encounter someone who may be going through a difficult time.
The focus is not on becoming an expert or having the perfect answer.
Instead, the workshop explores how to notice, how to begin a conversation and how to respond with care.
The practical exercises are designed to help participants feel more confident in taking that first supportive step.
Learning Through Guided Practice
The workshop's experiential format means participants can actively engage rather than remaining passive listeners.
Guided activities provide opportunities to think through different situations and consider possible responses.
Examples and discussion help connect the learning to real-world interactions, while reflection gives participants space to consider what they have learned.
A Workshop for Everyday Preparedness
Suicide prevention awareness is not only relevant to professionals.
Being There is designed for anyone who wants to be better prepared to support someone around them.
The workshop focuses on practical awareness and communication skills that participants can carry into their everyday interactions.
